Background

Sweden’s largest energy company Vattenfall is always striving to help people reduce their energy consumption. And since more than 30 % of the average Swede’s total energy consumption is related to transportation, like car commuting, they decided to promote electric bikes as an alternative to cars. But how do you get people to start considering an electric bike?

Insight

Out of all journeys made by car in urban areas, more than half are shorter than 5 km (3 miles). Many of these trips could easily be replaced by an electric bike. But are people aware of this?

Solution

Since the distance to the city center and time of transportation are key factors when looking for a new home, Vattenfall teamed up with Sweden’s largest real estate website – Hemnet. First, we selected real estate-ads with houses located at a suitable distance from the city center in Sweden’s three largest cities, Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo. Then we created a banner that showed up next to the real estate ads. In real-time, the banners fetched the address from the real estate ad, then combined the features of an electric bike with the features of Google Maps to calculate and show you how quickly you could go from each house to the city center by electric bike.
